  • Great content with stupid restrictions

I love this app and live in the US but travel a lot. That means that I cannot use it abroad because they decided to turn on geolocalization to restrict valid users to watch it abroad. What sense does it make? I pay my subscription in the US with a us card. Why I could not watch it abroad? Can't understand it. Please explain...

As of this writing (9/18), I’m having no problems using Filmstruck on an ipad running IOS11. The price is a great deal for what you get — seems to be part or all of Criterion’s DVD catalog, at least the films themselves (including obscure items like the Les Blank documentary set), plus many films from Turner’s great vintage Hollywood library. The price is very reasonable given the sheer size and quality of what you get, and they do some nice curating, offering combinations of films or series based on a particular person or theme. It’s kind of like having the world’s best art-house theater in your room. Many eras, many countries, no advertising hype to wade through. Highly recommended.

This Film is remarkable, especially given it was made in 1937. The sophistication of both the complex characters, the quality of the Cast ,the photography the dichotomy between the good countryside and the evil City. The multitude of layers of dichotomy and truly complex characters ; Kirk Douglas is fantastic in his role of the sophisticated outlaw, Robert Mitchum is equally strong as the lead character both are flawed but not in the obvious cliche way that most characters from the 30’s ,40’s ,50’s forget the dating through today we rarely find complex male characters and a truly evil women and then her saintly foil. This Film grows on me each time I have seen it. The mute deaf boy’s role is so interesting and the ending constructed around his “ word” speaks volumes. The mute boy and the chatty Hash waitress we meet early on in the picture is another beautiful contrast in characters that make each stronger. The cinematography is as good as are the actors ,the characters they play and allows the viewer to be comfortably led into this storyline and these characters. One of the best of the era or any era. A must watch and a strong buy for those who want a movie library.
  • The best nights at the movies

The nights that I choose a FilmStruck selection is always a memorable experience. I've missed Turner Classic Movies without cable access. This is a great way to view these wonderful films on my own schedule. It's luxury on a penny-wise budget.

I was frustrated by the lack of choices and the absence of great films from the past on Netflix, so I searched “Criterion Collection” and BOOM. Here it is. I have ADD so I need to be watching videos while I work (computer programming and animation)and I am SO GLAD I can rely on this app going forward, from Old Hollywood to Fassbinder and beyond !!!! Definitely worth the subscription !!!
  • The Best

This app and service has come a long way in a short amount of time and currently it’s hands down the best subscription video service I use. The content is presented in a thoughtful way that has little to do with algorithms and sub-genres, and boy does that make all the difference in the world. As much as I’ve enjoyed collecting the Criterion collection discs in the past, the experience is replicated very well here, the TCM selection is equally fantastic, and it’s all at your fingertips ready to go wherever you go. It’s just great. I’d love to see a digital locker and purchase option available for films down the road (as well as 4K!), but I can wait on that. There’s already way more to watch here now than I can keep up with.
  • MORE FILM NOIR!!!

Here’s a genre that should be readily featured on this app and isn’t. Everything is pigeon-holed in the same broad genres on TCM so discovery is very limited. It’s time to elevate this app into something more and this would be a start!!
  • FS getting better, room for improvement

This is more confirmation of what many have reported about Filmstruck. The performance of the app and content ranges from passable to great. TCM and Criterion content is strong. TCM is stronger because I believe they have the entire library. Criterion content is always fantastic as they continue to improve restorations, bonus content and trade out from their vast library. It is an incredible luxury to have on demand access to some of the greatest films ever made as well as hard to find (and acquire) Foreign ones. As many film lovers know the hard copy of these masterpieces were not only a bit pricey but were beautifully packaged and thoughtful bonus materials were nearly always included. For those who live in cities without art house cinemas these films might never be known and enjoyed. As for the cost it is pretty reasonable since the quality of what you get exceeds the consistency of any other on demand product (HBO,Showtime, Netflix, Hulu, etc) The tech and service side is where the most improvement needs to happen. So where content might be a five star rating service, support, tech are more in the 2-4 range. The mechanics, interactions, availability and access have been frustratingly difficult although I recently had an excellent interaction with Michelle there. The tech part of this is inconsistent. Everything from GUI, playback, design, navigation and accessibility are “ok” at best. I suspect most playback issues are NOT the fault of FS but a result of poor internet streaming speed. While the overall design and layout is pretty clean and uncluttered things lime unstructured search capabilities, hyperlinks and how content is organized needs a re-evaluation. On the positive side the app syncs with the Apple TV app so searching results can be improved by using the Apple search function.
